10 Warning Signs in a Newborn Every Parent Should Know | Expert Advice from Dr. Binesh Balachandran

By Dr. Binesh Balachandran | Pediatrician, Child Specialist & Neonatologist in Kottakkal, Kerala

Bringing home a newborn is one of the happiest moments in a family's life. At the same time, it can also be a period filled with anxiety, especially for first-time parents.

Many parents ask:

  • Is my baby feeding well?

  • Is this jaundice normal?

  • Why is my baby breathing fast?

  • When should I take my newborn to a doctor?

As a Pediatrician and PGIMER Chandigarh-trained Neonatologist in Kottakkal, I frequently meet parents who wish they had recognized certain warning signs earlier. While most newborn babies are healthy and adapt beautifully to life outside the womb, some symptoms should never be ignored.

Here are 10 important warning signs in a newborn that every parent should know.

1. Poor Feeding or Refusing to Feed

A healthy newborn usually feeds every 2–3 hours (8–12 feeds per day).

Seek medical attention if your baby:

  • Is too sleepy to feed

  • Refuses feeds repeatedly

  • Sucks weakly

  • Feeds only briefly and stops

Poor feeding may indicate infection, jaundice, dehydration, or low blood sugar.

2. Difficulty in Breathing

Normal breathing rate in a newborn is around 40–60 breaths per minute.

Warning signs include:

  • Fast breathing (>60 breaths/minute)

  • Chest retractions

  • Grunting sounds

  • Bluish lips or tongue

  • Pauses in breathing

Breathing difficulties require urgent medical evaluation.

As a Neonatologist and NICU Specialist in Malappuram, respiratory distress is one of the common emergencies I manage in newborn babies.

3. Fever or Low Body Temperature

A newborn's normal temperature is approximately 36.5°C to 37.5°C.

Seek medical attention if your baby has:

  • Fever (38°C or above)

  • Feels unusually cold

  • Lethargy with cold extremities

This may be an early sign of newborn infection or neonatal sepsis.

4. Yellow Eyes or Increasing Jaundice

Mild jaundice is common.

However, seek urgent medical advice if:

  • Jaundice appears within the first 24 hours

  • Yellow color increases rapidly

  • Baby becomes sleepy and feeds poorly

  • Jaundice spreads to the palms and soles

Early treatment can prevent complications.

5. Excessive Sleepiness

Consult your Pediatrician if your baby:

  • Is difficult to wake

  • Does not cry normally

  • Misses feeds due to sleepiness

  • Appears weak or inactive

6. Seizures or Abnormal Movements

Warning signs include:

  • Repetitive jerking

  • Lip smacking

  • Eye rolling

  • Sudden stiffness

  • Repeated unusual movements

Newborn seizures may be subtle and require urgent assessment.

7. Persistent Vomiting

Seek medical attention if your baby develops:

  • Green vomiting

  • Forceful projectile vomiting

  • Repeated vomiting with poor feeding

  • Vomiting with abdominal distension

8. Reduced Urine Output

A healthy newborn should pass urine regularly.

Warning signs:

  • Very few wet diapers

  • Sudden decrease in urine output

  • Signs of dehydration

9. Bluish Color of Lips or Skin

Bluish discoloration (cyanosis) may indicate:

  • Heart disease

  • Lung disease

  • Low oxygen levels

This is a medical emergency.

10. Baby Does Not Seem Right

Parents know their babies best.

If you feel:

  • "My baby is less active."

  • "Something is not right."

  • "My baby is behaving differently."

Trust your instincts and seek medical advice.

Early recognition saves lives.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Mild variations are normal, but persistent breathing above 60 breaths per minute, chest retractions, or grunting require immediate evaluation.

When should I worry about jaundice in my newborn?

Jaundice appearing within the first 24 hours, worsening rapidly, or associated with poor feeding should be evaluated urgently.

How often should a newborn feed?

Most newborns feed 8–12 times in 24 hours.

What is the most dangerous sign in a newborn?

Difficulty breathing, seizures, bluish discoloration, poor feeding, or excessive sleepiness should never be ignored.
